About Katannilik Territorial Park Reserve

Located in the south-central part of Baffin Island, Nunavut, Katannilik Territorial Park Reserve encompasses over 1,070 square kilometers of spectacular Arctic terrain centered around the Soper River. The park’s name, meaning “the place of waterfalls,” reflects its dramatic topography dominated by steep-sided canyons, cascading rivers, and expansive valleys carved by glaciers. Katannilik is home to a unique sub-Arctic ecosystem with a rich diversity of Arctic flora and fauna, including barren-ground caribou, Arctic foxes, ptarmigan, and a variety of migratory birds. Geologically, the park is distinguished by Precambrian rock formations and tundra landscapes shaped by millennia of glaciation.

The area is culturally significant to the Inuit, who have inhabited the region for thousands of years, relying on the land and rivers for hunting and travel. Visitors can explore the natural beauty by hiking through the park’s trails, canoeing or kayaking the meandering Soper River, fishing for Arctic char, or wildlife viewing. The park is a prime destination for backcountry enthusiasts seeking solitude and pristine wilderness. Notable landmarks include the Soper River Gorge with its spectacular waterfalls and crystal-clear pools.

Katannilik’s remote location means it offers unmatched tranquility and natural beauty but requires careful planning for access and safety. Seasonal daylight extremes, variable weather, and the presence of wildlife are important considerations. The park provides an authentic Arctic experience for adventurers, naturalists, and those interested in Inuit culture and northern landscapes.
